BEAR WITH ME

On World Suicide Prevention Day in 2020, a statue entitled “Bear with Me” was unveiled in Bristol.

Created by an anonymous artist, it was intended to encourage people to keep talking about mental health after the artist lost a close friend to suicide.

The sculpture is deeply moving. It shows a man in distress being comforted by a teddy bear.

The message is simple, yet powerful.

As children, we are allowed to be vulnerable. We cry without shame. We cling to our favourite teddy bear after a nightmare. We tell it our secrets. Somehow, that soft little companion makes the world feel a little safer.

Then we grow up.

Especially for men, vulnerability gradually becomes something to hide. We are told to be strong, to carry on, to stay in control.

“Men don’t cry.”

And somewhere along the way, the teddy bear quietly disappears.

Not because we no longer need comfort, but because we are taught that we shouldn’t.

Perhaps that is why this sculpture touches so many people.

It reminds us that, deep inside, the child who longed to be comforted never really disappeared.

We all still need a teddy bear from time to time.

Not necessarily one made of fabric and cotton, but someone who listens without judging, who sits beside us without trying to fix us, and simply says:

“I’m here. You don’t have to carry this alone.”

It always makes me smile that one of the few grown-up men who openly kept his beloved teddy bear was Mr. Bean.

Everyone laughed at him.

Perhaps we should have learned something from him instead.

Maybe the world doesn’t need tougher people.

Maybe it needs more people who dare to say, “I’m not okay today.”

Maybe it needs more people who remind us that vulnerability is not weakness. It is part of being human.

Perhaps we can become that teddy bear for someone else.

Not by solving their problems.

Not by having all the answers.

But by noticing when something isn’t right.

By offering a kind word.

By listening.

By holding a hand.

Or simply by being present.

Could you use a teddy bear today?

Very beautiful post. I grew up going through several deep depressions and was told to be quiet about it. So adult depression became longer bouts of depression and more dangerous ones. Friends fled and again family said be quiet about it. You are so correct about society needing to be open about these feelings and to support those in that space.

    Dear Katelon,
Thank you for sharing a bit of your personal story. It’s heartbreaking that so many people, including children and young people, go through so much turmoil that they begin to feel life is unbearable.
We fail as a society when we are unable to support and help those who are struggling.
I truly wish that everyone finds comfort in times of need, and that we have the compassion and discernment to know how to help 🩷
